Building commenced on the Central Pier in June 1867 and was completed in May 1868 ready for the start of that years summer season.
The Pier was over 1,000 feet long with an iron jetty (reaching a further 400 feet into the sea) and 24 feet wide. Pleasure cruises sailed daily to Liverpool, Barrow, Llandudno, Morecambe and Lytham.
There are 3 Piers along the Promenade, each within sight of the other. Even after over 130 years, the Piers are still one of the big attractions!
